Usage Precautions  

Please read the following section to ensure proper handling and use of this product.

General Precautions
O We are not liable for any data lost while using this product.
(Frequently back up your data in case problems may occur.)
 
Do not switch off the power of this product or any hard disk connected during usage. Doing so may cause malfunctioning and data loss.
 
Extra hard disks formatted in specified format must not be connected or disconnected while this product is operating, nor can they be used with other HDL-GXWs.
Make sure to follow the on-screen [disk deletion] steps before disconnecting.
Warning: once [disk deletion] is executed this product will be unusable even if re-connected.
 
When carrying out check disk ensure the operation is completed before the next step. Do not switch off power during operation.
 
When DHCP server is available this product will automatically acquire IP address from the DHCP server. There is no need to set individual IP address.
If no DHCP server is present (when each computer has a set IP address) then IP address must be set according to the network.
 
In some cases IP address may not be obtained properly even if this product is connected to a network with DHCP server. In such case, set this product to its fixed IP address.
 
Use this product over a local network.
It is extremely dangerous to allocate global IP address to this product and connect directly to the Internet. To ensure security, set up a router or use other measures to avoid being attacked on the Internet.
 
IP address and [HDL-GXW Name] must be set separately when adding this product to a multiple network system, or combining it with other HDL-GXWs.
 
O The built-in hard disk contained in this product is specifically formatted and cannot be changed to other formats.

 

Data Management of This Product and Additional Hard Disks.
O Users are recommended to back up data on additional hard disks periodically to avoid any data loss. We are not responsible for any data lost during operation of this product.
 
O Please note that the disk space used on additional hard disks shown on the on-screen setup for this product will differ greatly to the value allocated to network drives by Windows shown in the [Property] window.
This is the specification used in the Firmware display for this product, and is not a hard disk problem.
For the actual space used please refer to the on-screen setup for this product.
 
O The time required for the simple check of a hard disk performed from the on-screen setup will differ greatly according to the state and capacity of the hard disk.
The task should normally take very little time to complete. However, it may take up several minutes or longer depending on the state of the hard disk.
 
O Do not switch off this product or any of the additional hard disks while the [ACCESS] LED is flashing.
Doing so may cause hardware malfunctioning and data loss.
 
O The administrator of this product has full access right to all the shared folders. (when accessing from a Windows computer only)
To ensure security, the password used for accessing shared folders should be changed regularly.
 
O Files may not be properly copied if this product or additional hard disks are switched off while files are being copied.
Check the [ACCESS] LED on this product and additional hard disks before switching the power off.
 
O When copying files from Windows 98 to this product, if the task is terminated due to disconnection of the LAN cable or other factors, the incomplete copied file may remain undeletable on this product.
In that case, switch off the power, restart, delete the incomplete copied file, and re-copy the file.

 

Sharing Over Network
O This product may be inaccessible under a Firewall environment.
When this happens, allow access on port numbers 137-139 and 445 with the Firewall software setting.
 
O When using Windows Me files larger than 4GB will not be transferable via the network.
 
O When using Windows 98 (including SE) files larger than 2GB will not be transferable via the network.
 
O Connectible terminals

While the number of terminals on this product connectible via the network when using Windows is unlimited, performance will slow down with multiple computers simultaneously connected.

 
For Windows Recommended simultaneous connection is up to 16 computers.
(the same for network drives)
 
For Mac OS Recommended simultaneous connection is up to 8 computers (maximum up to 16).  
 
O Commonly, when sharing Macintosh computers either AppleTalk or TCP/IP may be used.
This product is compatible only with connection via AppleTalk.
When using AppleTalk files larger than 2GB will not be transferable via the network.

 

Usable Characters
O The number of characters for file and folder names allowed on this product is as follows:
For Windows Up to 255 characters.
For Mac OS X Up to 255 characters.

 

Sharing, User and Group Settings
  This product is shipped with a shared folder called [disk] created so that all types of users can access it when connecting to this product.
New shared folders can be created.
 
O Access limitations can be set for shared folders created on this product in 3 levels: [All Users] [Specitied User] [Specitied Group]
 
O

Up to 300 users and 100 groups can be registered with this product.
Each group can have up to 300 registered users.

 
O The same name cannot be used as the user name and the group name at the same time.
However, user name may share the same name with sharing name, likewise group name with sharing name.
 
O

Names containing only numerals cannot be used for user and group names.

 
O Numerals and hyphens (-) cannot be used to begin the computer ID name ([HDL-GXW Name]) for this product.
 
O

Space cannot be used for the sharing name.

 
O Only alphabet letters and numbers (ASCII) are valid for use for sharing name, group name, user name (lower caps only), and all passwords.
There is a limitation on the type and number of characters that can be used in the on-screen setup. For more information please refer to the Online Manual.

 

Cautions When Connecting USB Drives to a USB PORT and eSATA Drives to the eSATA Port

USB and eSATA hard disks that can be added to this product are compatible with the following formats:

When formatting to the FAT or NTFS format, connect the hard disk to the computer and format the disk from the computer. (Refer to the hard disk manual.)

In Windows XP/2000/Me, up to 4G-1 byte per 1 file is possible.
In Windows 98 (including SE), up to 2G-1 byte per 1 file is possible.

Additional harddisks formatted in the NTFS format on a Macintosh will not be mountable.
O DO NOT connect drives other than specified compatible drives to the USB ports (1, 2) on this product.
(USB hubs also should not be used.)
 
O USB drives operating on BUS power may be connected to the front [USB Port 1] only.
 
O Port For Digital Camera or USB flash drive Copying (USB Port 1)
> Confirm the start and end of a copy task, and any errors by checking the LED and the buzzer sound.  
  > We are not responsible for any data, such as photos, not copy properly due to any reason. Be sure to confirm the content of files being copied onto the computer once the copying is complete.  
 
O While files are being copied, DO NOT disconnect any drives connected to the USB port(s), or switch off this product and/or hard disk(s).
Doing so will disrupt the copying process. Before switching power off on this product and/or hard disk(s), make sure to confirm the [ACCESS] LED.
   
O When using drives that enables physical write protection with this product, such as hard disks with a write protect switch, make sure they are set-up to enable normal data writing.
